Hiram College

The Center celebrated its tenth anniversary with a summer seminar, a physician-writer lecture series, and the publication of an anthology of prose fiction or nonfiction focusing on experiences physicians have had which made their work satisfying or rewarding.

The celebration kicked-off with a summer seminar entitled "Time to Care: Narrative and Chronic Illness" June 6-11, which attracted health care professionals from across the country and throughout the world.

As part of the seminar, participants acted out plays under the direction of representatives from the Great Lakes Theater Festival in an effort to allow drama to lead to a greater understanding of the impact of illness on the individual sufferer's life. This night of "Beer and Leer" was well-attended, and well-received.

Supported by a grant from the Cleveland Foundation, four physician-writers were brought to Northeast Ohio under the auspices of the Center during the 2000-2001 academic year. They gave public talks in Cleveland as well as at Hiram and NEOUCOM. Speakers were Dr. Perry Klass, Dr. David Hellerstein and Dr. John Stone.
